理学療法士がパラスポーツの国際大会に出場！？　2026 U.S Open Adaptive Surfing Championships

2026年9月10日から13日にアメリカ・カリフォルニア州オーシャンサイドで開催された「U.S. Open Adaptive Surfing Championships」に、藤原智貴選手のピッチャーとして出場しました。

本大会は、アダプティブサーフィンのプロリーグ「AASP World Championship Tour 2026」の最終戦にあたり、年間王者を決める重要な一戦です。藤原選手は、3月にオーストラリアで開催された第一戦で4位、5月の第二戦ハワイ大会では優勝を果たし、総合ランキング2位で最終戦を迎えました。初の年間王者を目指して、シーズン最後の戦いに挑みました。

アダプティブサーフィンとは、身体機能や障がいの特性に応じてクラス分けを行い、それぞれの選手が自身の能力を最大限に発揮して競技を行うサーフィンです。競技では、身体機能に応じた7つのクラスと、視覚障害の程度に応じた2つのクラス、合計9つのクラスに分かれて競技が行われています。

腹ばいの姿勢で波に乗り、パドリングやボードへの安全な乗り込みに補助が必要なクラス。沖で波に乗せるポジションの「ピッチャー」と波に乗り終えた選手を安全にキャッチするポジションの「キャッチャー」の3人1組で競技に挑みます。

昨年、藤原選手とともに出場したUS Openでは準決勝で敗退し5位という結果でしたが、今年は決勝進出を果たしました。決勝では惜しくも3位となり、悲願の年間王者には届かず、年間ランキング2位でシーズンを終えました。決勝進出を果たした一方で、年間王者を懸けて挑んだだけに、悔しさの残る大会となりました。

今回の大会では、ピッチャーとして出場するだけでなく、理学療法士として大会前のコンディショニングにも携わりました。競技前には、身体の状態を確認し、サーフィンのパフォーマンスに関係する肩甲帯を中心にチェックしました。特に藤原選手のサーフィンは、固定した肘を支点として肩甲骨を動かし、ボードをコントロールする必要があります。

実際のサーフィン動作を踏まえて身体の状態を確認し、競技で力を発揮できるようコンディショニングを行いました。

今シーズンの大会は、計3戦で開催され、これをもって全日程を終えました。来シーズンからは「Japan Open」もプロリーグに初めて加わり、計4戦の予定です。日本国内でもアダプティブサーフィンのプロリーグを身近に感じていただける機会が増えていきます。

今回の大会で得た経験を今後の活動に生かし、藤原選手とともにさらに高みを目指していきたいと思います。

Introduction

From September 10 to 13, 2026, I competed in the 2026 U.S. Open Adaptive Surfing Championships held in Oceanside, California, USA, serving as a “pitcher” for athlete Tomoki Fujiwara.

This tournament served as the final leg of the professional adaptive surfing league, the AASP World Championship Tour 2026, making it a crucial showdown to determine the annual champion. Tomoki finished 4th in the first round held in Australia in March and claimed victory in the second round in Hawaii in May, entering this final event ranked 2nd overall. He took on the season’s final battle aiming for his first-ever annual championship title.

What is Adaptive Surfing (Para Surfing)?

Adaptive surfing is a sport where athletes are classified according to their physical functions and disability characteristics, allowing each competitor to maximize their abilities. The competition is divided into a total of nine classes: seven classes based on physical function and two classes based on the degree of visual impairment.

Prone Assist Class

In this class, athletes catch waves in a prone (lying face down) position and require assistance with paddling and safely boarding the surfboard. Competitions are performed by a team of three:

• Pitcher: Positions the athlete in the lineup to catch waves.

• Catcher: Safely receives the athlete after they ride the wave.

Tournament Results

Last year, when Tomoki and I competed together at the U.S. Open, we were defeated in the semifinals and finished 5th. This year, however, we successfully advanced to the final!

Although we narrowly finished 3rd in the final and fell just short of the coveted annual championship, we wrapped up the season ranked 2nd overall. While reaching the final was a major achievement, fighting so hard with our sights set on the overall title left us with a lingering sense of regret.

Pre-Match Conditioning as a Physical Therapist

During this tournament, I not only participated as a pitcher but also handled pre-match conditioning as a physical therapist.

Before the competition, I assessed Tomoki’s physical condition, focusing particularly on the shoulder girdle, which is vital for surfing performance. Specifically, Tomoki’s surfing style requires using a fixed elbow as a fulcrum to move the scapula and control the surfboard. By evaluating his physical state based on actual surfing movements, I provided conditioning to help him perform at his absolute best.

Conclusion

This season’s tour consisted of three events in total, bringing the schedule to a close. Starting next season, the Japan Open will officially join the professional league, bringing the total to four events. This will create even more opportunities for people in Japan to experience the professional adaptive surfing league up close.

I plan to apply the experience gained from this tournament to my future activities and aim even higher alongside Tomoki.
