September 15, 2026<\/b> \u2014 Four graduate students enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at the University of Washington (UW) Department of Rehabilitation Medicine visited Undouki Care Shimada Hospital.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Purpose of the Visit<\/h3>\r\n

This visit was organized as part of UW\u2019s international educational activities, with the goal of allowing students to learn firsthand about actual medical care and rehabilitation practices in Japan. The University of Washington regularly conducts international learning and exchange programs to help physical therapy students deepen their understanding of healthcare and rehabilitation systems around the world.<\/p>\r\n

The students specifically requested to observe Japanese orthopedic and sports physical therapy practices, centering their visit around a facility tour and outpatient rehabilitation shadowing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Facility Tour and Clinical Observation<\/h3>\r\n

The day began with self-introductions, an overview of our hospital, and a guided tour of the facilities. Following this, the students observed live clinical sessions in outpatient rehabilitation for orthopedic conditions.<\/p>\r\n

They showed a particularly strong interest in our rehabilitation approach for throwing injuries. Rather than focusing solely on the shoulder or elbow, our method evaluates and treats full-body movement\u2014including the lower limbs and trunk\u2014which sparked deep engagement. They eagerly observed our evaluations and exercise therapies, and actively communicated with our staff about our clinical reasoning and treatment philosophy.<\/p>\r\n

They were also fascinated by our hospital's performance area, asking questions about the equipment and how it is utilized. Observing these clinical sessions gave them a firsthand look at how our team evaluates patients and connects those assessments to improving motor function and sports performance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Cross-Cultural Clinical Dialogue<\/h3>\r\n

During the tour, questions arose regarding outpatient rehabilitation visit frequencies and treatment content, leading to a lively exchange of opinions on the differences between rehabilitation in the U.S. and Japan. Because healthcare systems and the professional environments surrounding physical therapists differ between the two countries, it was a precious opportunity to learn about each other's clinical realities.<\/p>\r\n

In the post-observation discussion, the graduate students introduced us to the U.S. DPT educational curriculum and orthopedic physical therapy. Rather than a one-sided presentation of our clinical practice, it became a wonderful two-way dialogue where both sides asked questions and shared insights. This fully achieved the day's goals: facility tours, staff interactions, and meaningful discussions on the differences in rehabilitation between the U.S. and Japan.<\/p>\r\n

Following the visit, the students shared their impressions:<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Our hospital staff worked seamlessly together to welcome the students, handle the facility tour, introduce clinical work, provide English communication support, and facilitate discussions. Many staff members contributed from their respective roles, maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the day. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the staff members who cooperated to make this exchange such a success.<\/p>\r\n

This exchange not only gave the graduate students a chance to learn about our musculoskeletal and sports physical therapy, but also provided our team with an invaluable opportunity to learn about U.S. physical therapy education and clinical practices.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Looking Forward<\/h3>\r\n

Even though countries and healthcare systems differ, the core passion for physical therapy\u2014\"how we evaluate and treat patients to achieve better recovery and enhanced performance\"<\/b>\u2014shares much in common. It was a wonderful reminder of the importance of learning from each other's clinical experiences.<\/p>\r\n
